The Chelsea King story has resulted in so many different expressions of support and love for Chelsea's legacy and has ignited a passion to change our laws so this can never happen again. Being a Firefighter in the city of Poway, along with having two wonderful children, this tragedy struck very close to home for my wife and I. We then decided, along with our good friends Ruben and Cindy Salgado to do something to help keep the forward momentum going with some of the positive changes that Chelsea's Light Foundation has been able to accomplish. We wanted to find a way to help raise money for her foundation to not only help keep her memory alive, but to ensure future generations of our children will be kept safe and given every opportunity to succeed. Knowing that Chelsea was an avid runner, we felt that a fitting way to help raise money would be through some sort of running or endurance event. This then led to the idea of doing an Iron distance triathlon in her honor, with the hopes of raising a minimum of five thousand dollars for her foundation.
On December 1, 2012, I will participate in the 2012 H.I.T.S series Iron distance triathlon (2.4 mile swim, 112 mile bike, 26.2 mile run) in Palm Springs, California in memory of Chelsea King. All proceeds raised will benefit the Chelsea King charitable organization, Chelsea's Light Foundation. Chelsea's Light Foundation is a non-profit organization created to honor Chelsea King's memory by focusing on laws geared towards creating safe communities across America (currently underway in Illinois, Ohio, Texas and implemented in California in 2011); as well as providing scholarships for college bound students who have embraced Chelsea's service-over-self ethic. The foundation also grants scholarships to students who are less privileged, unable to partake in extracurricular activities due to cost, all of which were so dear to Chelsea's heart.
Here's how you can get involved. You can donate a specified amount or donate on a per mile finished basis (much like the jog-a-thon you might remember from elementary school). Either donation method will benefit the foundation. No donation is too small. Anything and everything helps this very worthy cause. The total distance completed will be 140.6 miles. The goal is to raise a minimum of $5,000 for this amazing foundation. This is a fight close to our hearts and we hope you can help spread the word and join us in our efforts of protecting the future of our children. Any questions, please feel free to contact me anytime.
